Lessons & Activities: Grades 6 - 8

Alliance to Save Energy

Home Energy Audit
This lesson is part of emPowered at Home, an offshoot of our traditional PowerSave Schools program, and it is applicable to students from grades 3-12. In this lesson, students learn about the importance of energy conservation before conducting home lighting, appliance, and HVAC audits. In the lighting audit, they will identify the kinds of bulbs that their families use and calculate their savings if they use more efficient bulbs or reduce the hours per day that the lights are on. In the appliance audit, they will learn about ENERGY STAR appliances and energy vampires before doing a scavenger hunt to find them in their homes. They will then discuss whether to unplug energy vampires with their families. Finally, in the HVAC audit, they will about different HVAC systems, how to them work more efficiently, and calculate their savings if they adjust their thermostat a few degrees. They will share their findings from all three audits with their families to help their homes become more energy efficient and save money. All of the supporting materials are linked in the instructions in the Google Slides deck. Please contact me with any questions!
